New Development Bank approves up to $1 billion loan for water projects in South Africa
CAPE TOWN (Reuters) -The New Development Bank has approved a new loan of up to $1 billion to finance water and sanitation projects among poorer households in South Africa, the bank said in a statement on Saturday. The loan will be used under South Africa's Municipal Infrastructure Grant, a conditional grant used by municipalities to reduce backlogs and enhance the provision of basic services to poorer communities. The bank, which was set up by the BRICS group of emerging economies in 2015, also approved a loan of $150 million equivalent in the local Chinese currency renminbi to China's Bank of Communications Financial Leasing for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation project.

China accused a Philippines coast guard ship of deliberately colliding with a Chinese vessel Saturday in the latest flareup of tensions over disputed waters and maritime features in the South China Sea. In a statement posted on social media, Chinese coast guard spokesperson Liu Dejun was quoted as saying that the Philippine ship with hull number 9701 collided with the Chinese ship 5205 just after 12:06 p.m. (04:06 GMT) Saturday. As the Philippine ship maneuvered, it “deliberately collided” with the Chinese coast guard ship “in an unprofessional and dangerous manner, resulting in a collision,” Liu was quoted as saying, adding the standard claim that the Chinese ship was operating within regulations, without giving any details.

Weeks of flooding have killed nearly 200 people in Nigeria and washed away homes and farmlands, the country's disaster management agency said, further threatening food supplies, especially in the hard-hit northern region. The floods blamed on poor infrastructure and badly maintained dams have killed 185 people and displaced 208,000 in 28 of Nigeria’s 36 states, the National Emergency Management Agency said in an update Friday, triggering frantic efforts to evacuate hundreds of thousands to makeshift shelters.
