The Demons of Demon Slayer are a truly fascinating lot. They come in all shapes and sizes, and while they are evil in their demonic form, their backstories and their lives while they were human usually contain a very tragic note that makes you feel sad for them. But there are also exceptions, and one such exception is the protagonist of this article – Doma. The Upper Rank Two of the Twelve Kizuki, Doma is an exceptionally powerful Demon and a very vile character at that. In this article, you are going to find out whether he died and what happened to him.
Like all the Demons in the series, Doma was killed during the Demon Slayer Corps’ final assault on Muzan and his followers. He died while fighting Shinobu and Kanao, with the former having dosed herself with enough Wisteria poison to kill Doma; as Doma ingested her, the poison started working, and Doma was soon killed. Shinobu sacrificed herself to kill the powerful Demon.

You already know what happened and how it happened, so we will just bring you the details so you know the whole context. Be careful, though, as the article will contain many spoilers, so if you don’t know all the details, be careful how you approach the text.
Doma was killed by Shinobu
Doma is introduced to the story as an exceptionally powerful demon and a member of Muzan’s Twelve Kizuki, where he holds the rank of the Upper-Rank Two, meaning that he is the second most powerful demon in the group; the first one is Kokushibo, Yoriichi’s brother. Due to his beautiful rainbow eyes and pure white hair, Doma was considered a supernatural being from birth and became the religious leader of the Heavenly Faith Cult, a position he maintained until nowadays.
While Doma was still a child, his mother had a complete psychotic breakdown. She attacked his father, stabbing him to death in the process because he had numerous extramarital affairs with other female members of the cult they belonged to. She poisoned herself to death right away and committed suicide. Even though he directly witnessed the sad*stic revenge murder, which played out right in front of his eyes, Doma was merely annoyed by the blood and the mess that was left behind and revolted by the overpowering smell of blood.
He merely wished to ventilate the space before the smell solidified on the furniture. He encounters Muzan Kibutsuji when he is 20 years old, who turns him into a Demon. Because he consumed so much of Muzan’s blood as part of the transformation, Doma became an exceptionally powerful Demon.
Although he was introduced much later in the story, Doma had a very important role in the lives of many characters. For example, after Inosuke’s mother ran away from her abusive husband and his mother, she joined Doma’s cult; Doma accepted her because he found her beautiful and would later kill her husband and his mother when they came looking for her. But, when Inosuke’s mother realized what was going on, she ran away, and saved Inosuke, but ultimately ended up being killed by Doma.
He also found the siblings Gyutaro and Ume and turned them into Demons (Gyutaroand Daki), even inducing them into the Twelve Kizuki. He also fought and mortally wounded Kanae Kocho, the Flower Hashira, but could not devour her because the sun was rising. After Kanae died, her sister, Shinobu, the Insect Hashira, vowed to avenge her sister by killing the demon that killed her. And that is what leads us to the final confrontation between Doma and Shinobu.
Long before their final battle, Shinobu knew that she was going to die at Doma’s hands so, foreseeing this would happen. With the help of Tamayo, she inoculated herself for a year with a strong dose of Wisteria poison in her body. The total dose administered was seventy times more powerful than the common doses.
Now, during the final battle with Doma, after everything else had failed, Shinobu finally sacrificed herself, allowing Doma to consume, which he happily did. Knowing her plan, Doma falls to the ground as his entire body melts. Desperately, he tries to regenerate but fails. The dolls he had created disappear, and Inosuke thinks that it is a trap, but Kanao confirms that her teacher’s poison is working, so they should go for his head.
The demon does not give up and uses his last strength to implement his Demon Blood Art, allowing him to create a large Buddhist ice statue surrounded by large lotuses to protect himself from the attack of both hunters. Kanao and Inosuke are surprised at how much strength Doma has left despite his death.
In a desperate attempt to stop Doma from regenerating, Kanao uses Flower Breathing on him by applying her final form while being aware that this could cause her blindness. With her active technique, Kanao is able to perceive every movement of the large statue created by Doma. Doma tries to regenerate while she protects herself with the big statue.
Bypassing the method, Kanao gets ready to sever the demon’s head. Inosuke throws his swords so that they contact Kanao’s blade and lend extra force to his cut as if they were scissors, so managing to cut off Doma’s head. In the meantime, the sculpture blasts a freezing snowstorm that partially freezes Kanao’s back.
As he dies, Doma feels pathetic for losing to a group of weak hunters and tries to regenerate his head like Akaza but fails and realizes that he is about to die, remembering his childhood in which his father was a lecherous person who he founded the cult only to surround himself with women, until his mother discovered it, murdered him and later she committed suicide by ingesting poison.
Doma could only do in response to this scenario to throw open the windows to let the stink of blood out. After passing away, the heads of Doma and Shinobu are conversing. Shinobu admits to Doma that she regrets not being able to support her colleagues during the battle with Muzan, but she is still happy with the outcome. Doma finally expresses emotion after observing her by claiming that he has fallen in love with Shinobu and suggests that they go to hell together. She responds with an insulting smirk and declines her offer, mocking Doma.
And this is how Doma died. It was a relatively fitting death for such a vile Demon, and not just because he died in a very painful manner, but because even after his death, he experienced rejection, as he did not get what he wanted. Most of the Demons in the story had some meaningful backstory, a story marred by tragedy, but Doma was simply vile both as a human and as a Demon; very little changed with the transformation, and Doma simply gained more powers, but he did not become eviler, as he was already evil from the very start.
