Fast X's ending leaves a major character's fate up in the air, as the
delivered the first of a potential three-part finale packed with action sequences and multiple cliffhangers.
The tenth instalment sees Dom (Vin Diesel) haunted by his past when Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), son of Fast Five villain Hernan Reyes, enacts his revenge on Dom to make him suffer for his father's death.
And that revenge leads to a jaw-dropping climax that leaves Dom's fate up in the air and everybody asking the same question: is Dom dead?
If you were too stunned by what you were watching to take it all in, you can watch it again from home as Fast X is available to rent or buy digitally in the UK.
If you still need more answers, though, we're here to help by delving into the ending and how it sets up .
Fast X ending explained
Dante doesn't want to kill Dom, that'd be too simple; he wants to make him suffer and part of that is to make Dom and his entire crew terrorists by tricking them into stealing a bomb in Rome.
Dom manages to stop the bomb from blowing up the Vatican, but it still lands them all in hot water. Letty is arrested and taken to a black site in Antarctica (where Cipher is also being held up), while Dom goes on the run and Tej, Ramsey, Roman and Han escape to London via a cargo ship.
New Agency boss Aimes isn't a fan of Dom and uses the Rome debacle to send all agents after him, while Mr Nobody's daughter Tess tries to help Dom from the inside by pointing him towards Rio and warning him about Dante.
As Dom is trying to track down Dante in Rio, the rest of his crew – minus Letty – are heading to a previously-agreed rendezvous point in Portugal, where they're supposed to go when all sh*t hits the fan. Jakob's on the way there too with Dom's son Brian because he's now a funcle (fun uncle).
In Rio, Dante manages to steal God's Eye from Tess (who had taken it from the Agency) and he uses it to send mercenaries after Dom's familia and everybody who's ever helped him, given that Dante now knows where everybody is.
Dom doesn't manage to stop Dante in Rio, but Aimes is now on Dom's side and agrees to take him to Portugal so that Dom can protect Brian. With the help of Deckard Shaw in London, Ramsey, Tej, Roman and Han are also en route to Portugal.
Jakob is unable to stop Dante from taking Brian in Portugal, but he then sacrifices himself to help Dom evade Dante's mercenaries to save Brian. Dom manages to get Brian back from Dante and is heading to the getaway plane that Aimes has promised – but it's a trap.
Aimes has actually been working for Dante ever since Fast Five (he was even there when Dom heisted the safe), and he's lured him into a trap. To prove he's a proper bastard now, Aimes even shoots down the plane that Ramsey, Tej, Roman and Han are on, which crashes off screen.
Dom – with Brian in the car – drives down a massive dam to avoid the tankers that Dante tries to crash into him, but it's exactly what Dante wanted.
As Dom and Brian are at the bottom of the dam, Dante sets up the multiple bombs he's got planted on the dam to flood it and as the countdown goes to zero, the screen cuts to black.
As for Dom, could they really have done that? Have they killed off the Fast Saga's main character?
Is Dom dead in Fast X?
Without even getting into the credit scene that brings back Hobbs, Fast X leaves so many questions for fans to speculate over.
How will Dom get out of the soon-to-be-flooded dam (because they're definitely not killing him and his son off)? Did Ramsey, Tej, Roman and Han survive the plane crash? How is Gisele back alive and why is she seemingly working with Cipher? Is Jakob really dead (probably, but you never know with this series)?
And we haven't even really touched on the fact that Deckard goes off to save his mum Queenie from Dante's mercenaries. Or the fact that we're still no clearer where Mr Nobody has been for the past two movies.
If you think that every character will be safe because this is Fast & Furious where characters regularly defy death (and sometimes come back from the dead), then think again as Louis Leterrier is preparing us for the worst.
"I know where the franchise ends and I know where the problems are in the 25 years of consequences that led up to that moment. But there are many ways to get there. Many roads will lead us to the end," he told EW.
"As a fan, you will love the ending and you will cry. Part 2 is going to be a sad one. It's going to be beautiful, and I'm so happy I'm doing it."
With two years to wait until Fast & Furious 11, we've got plenty of time to speculate over what he means. Right now though, we're as in the dark as you, except for the fact we're pretty confident that Dom won't be dead... probably?
How is Gisele back in Fast X?
If that's not a big enough cliffhanger for you, then the final scene of Fast X takes us back to Antarctica where Letty and Cipher have broken out of the black site.
They seem pretty screwed without any transport though – until a submarine breaks out of the ice and we see Gisele pop out of the hatch as the movie ends. Yep, she's alive somehow, but who the hell knows how. Apparently, Gal Gadot doesn't know how either.
Our initial thoughts are that Mr Nobody had something to do with it, given that it was revealed in Fast & Furious 9 that he helped Han fake his death. So it's entirely possible that he did the same for Gisele.
That's just speculation from us for now though, especially since Mr Nobody is currently MIA in the franchise. The other question though is if it was Mr Nobody, does that mean Han knows Gisele is alive too?
So many questions and still two years to wait for Fast X Part 2...
Fast X is available to buy or rent on Amazon/Prime Video, Apple TV/iTunes, and the Microsoft Store in the UK.
